Data Wiping, Degaussing and Physical Destruction; What Do They Mean?

The three core data destruction methods explained - and how to choose the right one for your business.

When it comes to disposing of old IT equipment, deleting files simply isn't enough. Businesses must take proactive steps to prevent data leaks, stay compliant and reduce risk. This is where professional data destruction methods come in.

What is data wiping?

Data wiping involves using software to overwrite data on a storage device. This process replaces existing files with random binary patterns, often multiple times, to ensure the data cannot be recovered.

It's one of the most common methods used for hard drives and solid-state drives. When performed properly, data wiping is secure and can allow the device to be reused. However, it's not foolproof - if the device is damaged, wiping might not reach all data sectors. That's where degaussing becomes essential.

What is degaussing?

Degaussing is a process that uses a powerful magnetic field to erase data stored on magnetic media such as hard drives and tapes. Unlike data wiping, degaussing does not rely on software. Instead, it disrupts the magnetic domains where data is stored, effectively rendering the information unreadable and unrecoverable.

This method is incredibly effective - but it comes at a cost. Once a device is degaussed, it can no longer be reused. The drive's firmware and magnetic structure are permanently destroyed. That's why degaussing is ideal for businesses that handle highly sensitive information or operate under strict compliance rules such as GDPR or ISO standards.

What is physical destruction?

Physical destruction involves physically breaking or shredding the device, making it impossible to recover data. This can be done using industrial shredders or crushing machines. While it's a visible and straightforward solution, it should only be used as a final step - especially when dealing with drives that have already been wiped or degaussed.

Physical destruction is irreversible, which means no part of the device can be reused or resold. For this reason, it's commonly used for hardware that has reached the end of its lifecycle.

Which method is right for your business?

  • Choose data wiping if you want to reuse or resell your hardware.
  • Choose degaussing for maximum data protection when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Choose physical destruction when disposal is your only option.
