What Is NIST 800-88?
NIST Special Publication 800-88 (Guidelines for Media Sanitization) is the internationally recognised standard published by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. It defines three levels of data sanitisation, Clear, Purge and Destroy, giving organisations a clear framework for eliminating data from storage media.
By wiping to the Purge level, we ensure data cannot be recovered even with advanced forensic tools. This approach is approved for the sanitisation of classified and sensitive data, and is widely adopted across UK government, NHS, financial services and legal sectors.
Unlike physical destruction, NIST 800-88 erasure allows assets to be safely reused or remarketed, maximising residual value and supporting circular-economy goals.
